100 years of the International Labor Organization ILO

The Federal Council has confirmed Switzerland's candidacy to chair the 108th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC), which will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The meeting will be held in Geneva from June 10 to 21, 2019. In addition, on May 15, 2019, the Federal Council appointed the members of the tripartite delegation (employers, employees, government) who will represent Switzerland at the ILC.

The ILC is expected to adopt a declaration on the centenary of the ILO (ILO international labor organization), which will serve as the basis for the organization's future action in the context of its mission to promote social justice. This declaration is based, among other things, on the report of the Global Commission on the Future of Work. Switzerland will work for the adoption of this declaration and will also support the action of the ILO for the elaboration of a convention as well as a recommendation on the subject of Violence and harassment against women and men support in the workplace, as international leadership and an integrated approach are needed in this area.

Switzerland is a candidate for the IAK presidency

Federal Councillor Alain Berset, head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs FDHA, will represent the Swiss government and the host state of the ILO and will deliver a speech at the opening ceremony on June 10, 2019. On June 18, 2019, Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin, who as head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER is responsible for labor issues, will present a paper on the future of work to the plenary. He will also host Switzerland's reception for ILC delegates to celebrate the ILO's 100th anniversary.

Switzerland is running Ambassador Jean-Jacques Elmiger of the Directorate of Labor of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) for the chairmanship of the IAK. He is given the title of Secretary of State for this task.

The government delegation will be led by Boris Zürcher, Head of the Labor Directorate of the SECO, headed. For the duration of the conference, he will be given the title of Secretary of State. The delegation of employers will be led by Blaise Matthey, Director General of the Fédération des Entreprises RomandesGeneva, and that of the employees by Luca Cirigliano, central secretary of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions (SGB), Bern.

In 2019, the ILO celebrates its 100th anniversary. Switzerland is one of the founding members of the ILO and since 1919 has been a host state of this oldest specialized organization of the UNO headquartered in Geneva. The establishment of ILO headquarters in Geneva laid the foundation for the development of multilateralism and international Geneva in the 20th century.
