2016 is a record year for ticks

Since surveillance began in 2008, Switzerland has never recorded as many tick bites as in the current year.

Tick bites are particularly common this year.

Record year for ticks: An extrapolated 21,900 doctor visits for tick bites were recorded across Switzerland by the end of last week - the highest figure since the numbers have been recorded. This is reported by the Federal Office of Public Health. Last year, there were 14,300 bites.

The number of cases of Lyme disease, which is transmitted by ticks, is also higher than in recent years, with 8400 cases to date, although still slightly below the record year of 2013 with 8700 cases.

The number of tick bites and Lyme disease cases have been entered weekly by doctors in the Sentinella reporting system since 2008, but on a voluntary basis. The cases are extrapolated to the whole of Switzerland.
