5G expansion: "Basically outrageous!"
In November, the course is to be set in Germany for the auction of the new 5G frequencies in March. Also in Switzerland. That is why Prof. Dr. theol. habil. Werner Thiede, author of the book "Mythos Mobilfunk" (2012), calls for reflection - in the form of a brochure. Prof. W. Thiede in an interview by "diagnose:funk".
Prof. Dr. Helmuth Kern (D-Neckartenzlingen) of the Diagnostic Radio Board interviewed him about his new publication entitled "Die digitale Fortschrittsfalle. Why the gigabit society with 5G mobile communications (see technical article in SAFETY-PLUS 3/18) is threatened with backsliding in terms of freedom and health":
Editorial department diagnose:funk: Prof. Thiede, with your brochure you join the phalanx of critics of the upcoming 5G mobile communications who are currently speaking out from all continents. Is your approach to the subject different from that of warning doctors and IT experts?"
Prof. Thiede: In fact, I argue mainly in my capacity as a systematic theologian - i.e., under ethical aspects and with an analytical view of the human image. Of course, I also take up the medical and technical arguments that are critical of the fourth and especially the fifth generation of mobile phones. But my approach is primarily a humanistic one: I place the complex topic in a theological-philosophical framework. And for this, the reference to the concept of progress seems to me to be particularly suitable.
Are you approaching this as an "enemy of progress"?
Hardly anyone will consider themselves an "enemy of progress"; that is a polemical term used by the digitalization drivers. But they obviously cultivate a rather naïve concept of progress - as if all technical development were to be welcomed as a matter of course and were beneficial to mankind. In the 21st century, we should be long past such a view of things. But the prophets of the digital revolution uphold this view and regard it as an imperative to which politics must subordinate itself.
And politics is happy to play along?
Politicians have always been committed to economic growth - a principle that is no longer uncontroversial. Unconditional growth is often seen as synonymous with technological progress. Conservative parties in particular have always cultivated this notion. That's why in Germany, the C parties in particular are advocating forced Digitizationinstead of becoming aware of - and drawing attention to - the problematic aspects of all-round networking from the perspective of a Christian view of humanity!
