Revised water mist guideline
The loss prevention agency has comprehensively adapted the assistance for the safe planning and installation of water mist extinguishing systems, VdS 3188, to new risks such as techniques.
The decisive factor for successful fire fighting is always the immediate response - ensured by reliable extinguishing technology. Water mist systems significantly increase the effect of the water used by generating very small droplets, thus achieving a rapid cooling effect. Radiant heat is effectively absorbed and partial inertization is achieved in the combustion zone by evaporation. Water damage is also minimized as a result.
What was added?
Safe planning, installation and handling of the complex technologies are ensured by the VdS 3188 guidelines, which were published five years ago as the first European standard for these increasingly important systems. Now VdS has comprehensively revised these guidelines. Newly created are, among others, aids for the use of foam agents, for water supply and filters or the operating time according to standard prEN 14972. Included are now also concepts for wall sprinklers in offices and common areas, specified by real fire tests.
"Our core focus during the revision of the guide was to facilitate reliable safety," emphasizes Christian Kopp, expert for water mist systems at the fire protection certifier. "To simplify the work processes of installers, insurers and authorities, the new VdS 3188 offers not only clearly proven reliability but also the familiar compactness and transparency."
