Safe extinguishing monitor systems for waste disposal sector

Firefighting monitors are increasingly being installed in the waste disposal sector for a targeted firefighting attack. Now there is an aid with precise specifications for the effective installation of this technology.

Fire protection experts face special challenges in the waste management industry: Fires regularly occur, for example, due to spontaneous combustion or improperly disposed batteries. Added to this are difficult ambient conditions and deep-seated fires that spread rapidly on the surface. According to the VdS institute, protective technologies therefore quickly reach their limits, especially in storage in the recycling and recovery sector. One solution that has been increasingly used recently is extinguishing monitors. Among other things, they detect fires by infrared and, with their swivel operation, bring the necessary extinguishing agents directly to the source of the fire.

Correct extinguishing procedures

New concepts usually also increase the degree of difficulty for those responsible for implementation, who are faced with a new choice of the right extinguishing processes. At the request of both insurers and installers, the company has bundled its expertise on the subject in a special leaflet. The Leaflet VdS 3884 for the planning and installation of extinguishing monitor systems in the waste management industry should be seen as a direct supplement to the established "VdS Guidelines for Foam Extinguishing Systems, Planning and Installation" (VdS 2108).

Assistance on twelve pages

"On twelve pages, we offer assistance for reliable monitor extinguishing systems in sorting, processing, storage and recycling," explains Garvin Musa, VdS test expert and technical manager for the new publication. "VdS assures planners, operators, insurers and concept creators with concrete specifications on design principles, reliable water as well as energy supply, extinguishing processes and, of course, the maintenance of operational readiness."
