National Council candidates have a hard time with ICT
Data protection, the Intelligence Services Act and net neutrality are important issues. That's why the industry association Swico took the pulse of the National Council candidates with regard to information and communications technology.
In the run-up to the national parliamentary elections, the Swico surveyed candidates for the National Council on their affinity for ICT. Around 400 candidates for the National Council who describe themselves as having an affinity for ICT took part in the survey conducted by the information and communications technology provider association. The results of the Swico parliamentary rating show that young politicians from German-speaking Switzerland have the greatest affinity with IT issues. The FDP, GLP and SVP parties came out on top. The first places are occupied by Gregori Schmid (GLP), Canton Zurich, and Pascal Senn, Jungfreisinnige St. Gallen, followed by GLP National Councilor Beat Flach from Canton Aargau.
ICT is usually a closed book for many politicians, even though they are active in social media, according to Swico. Parliamentarians with an affinity for ICT can be counted on one hand. No wonder, then, that the IT industry - one of the five largest sectors of the Swiss economy - is clamoring for more representatives in parliament.
In addition to the FDP, GLP and SVP, the Green Party candidates also did very well in the Swico survey, the association writes. "The Green Party has an above-average representation of the 20- to 35-year-old segment, which, as 'digital natives,' is not unexpectedly at the top," says Lara König, project manager at Swico.
