What threats?

The ICT world is becoming more dangerous. Every day we read about new threats, attackers and access methods, financial losses for those affected, the misuse of the Internet for illegal activities and foreign reconnaissance services with an insatiable appetite for data.

The greatest threat potential is represented by the "professional" attacker side: It is proportionally usually better equipped and can act on a multitude of vulnerabilities caused by complexity, negligence or lack of resources. In this race and arms race, it is therefore to be feared that information security will hardly ever find itself in an advantageous position - it will continue to be able to use its scarce resources only for the most necessary defensive measures especially required by law or regulation, and in the process accept open flanks.

In the long term, information security will be influenced - for better or worse - by six emerging trends: First, new computing paradigms: Quantum, bio and neurocomputing will massively accelerate computing power, especially parallelizable processes. This can benefit both the attacker side ("brute force" attacks) and the defense side (quantum ciphering).

The other trends can be read in the 5/2015 issue of SicherheitsForum, IT Security. The technical article was written by Prof. Dr. Hannes P. Lubich, University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland. A trial subscription to SicherheitsForum can be here be requested.
