More and more people work flexibly
Flexible working hours continue to increase in Switzerland.
Just under half of employees (44.6%) had flexible working hours in 2014. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office BfS. In the last survey in 2004, the figure was only 41.7%. The flexible models range from weekly or monthly working hours to annual working hours to working hours without any formal requirements at all. Men are more likely than women to be employed in such a model (51.1% compared to 37.6%), and people with a university or college degree are significantly more likely than those without post-compulsory education (62.3% compared to 17.9%).
Part-time work is also on the rise. Today, 36% of the workforce are employed on a part-time basis, compared with 31.7% in 2004. Here, the difference between the sexes is particularly pronounced: For men, the figure is only 15.9%, while for women it is 59.2%.
People also work at weekends and at night: For example, more than one-fifth of those in employment work regularly on Saturdays and around one in ten on Sundays. Every twentieth person also regularly works at night.
