The grilling season is over - what to do with the gas grill? Rolling it into the basement is not a good idea.

The summer barbecue party is only a fond memory. Now it is time to safely winterize the gas grill.
The summer barbecue party is only a fond memory. Now it is time to safely winterize the gas grill.

It has provided faithful service all summer, whether at home on the balcony or on the office terrace: the gas grill. But with autumn, the barbecue season comes to an end.

The Fire Prevention Advisory Board (BfB) warns against wintering the barbecue indoors, because gas can escape even when the bottles are properly sealed - for example, due to material fatigue. Gas cylinders should therefore never be overwintered in stored rooms - because if a gas cloud forms, even the smallest spark can trigger an explosion.

The BfB therefore recommends that barbecues and gas cylinders be stored separately. For gas bottles, make sure that all valves are tightly closed and place the safety cap on the valve. A gas bottle belongs in a safe place outdoors for safety reasons.

Also observe the safety instructions that are attached to each gas bottle. Place the gas cylinder on a level floor. Have defective gas cylinder repaired only by designated specialists.

The BfB's safety tips at a glance:

  • Disconnect the gas bottle from the grill.
  • Overwinter grill without gas bottle in the basement or garage.
  • Close the valves of the gas cylinder tightly and with the safety cap.
  • Store gas cylinder outdoors only.
  • Do not store gas cylinder with highly flammable material such as wood chips or paper.
  • Smoking and handling fire are prohibited in the vicinity of gas cylinders.
