Black ice? The penguin gait prevents falls

Walk slowly and with small steps - and shift the body's center of gravity forward: This walking style, which is imitated by the penguin, provides more stability on icy roads.

Penguins show how it's done: Shifting the body's center of gravity to the front leg and taking small, slow steps helps to maintain balance on icy surfaces.

Black ice often causes pedestrians to fall. The German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) therefore advises using the penguin walk in icy conditions: Pedestrians should push themselves slowly and with small steps over the ground. The gait mimics a penguin: The body's center of gravity is aligned over the front leg, i.e. the treading leg - the foot always touches down with the entire sole and points slightly outward. The loaded leg is thus at a right angle to the floor. The slightly forward-leaning posture thus provides more stability. This reduces the risk of losing one's balance on slippery surfaces and falling.

This is how the penguin walk goes.

Dr. Christopher Spering, head of the DGOU Prevention Section, explains: "In winter, gait insecurity worsens, especially among older people. This is compounded by delayed reflexes. In the event of a fall, elderly people cannot catch themselves sufficiently and fall unchecked onto the hard ground. Due to their often frail general condition, the injuries are then particularly severe."

Whether young or old, orthopedists and trauma surgeons offer five tips in addition to the penguin gait to help pedestrians walk more safely on mirror-smooth asphalt:

  • Find a foothold: Walk with a person hooked on or feel your way along the wall of a house or a railing.
  • Only wear shoes with tread in winter: If you have to wear elegant shoes at work, it's best not to change them until you get to the office.
  • Wear shoe spikes: By using spikes, even normal footwear can be made suitable for winter. The spikes, also called anti-slip sole, can be quickly and easily attached to the shoe and protect against slipping.
  • Leave the bike: The bike should not be in season in winter. Since the bike does not have winter tires, the wheels quickly slide off to the side when braking on snow and icy conditions - a high risk of accidents.
  • For elderly people who are unsure of their gait: Do not take any unnecessary risks and, if possible, stay at home when it is very slippery.
