Picture book to arm children against abuse

In an interconnected world, we are confronted, more often than we would like, with one of the worst topics: sexual abuse of children is and remains a highly topical issue. It seems that children no longer enjoy safety. Abuse does not only take place on campsites or with the "bad, unknown man", but often in the close social environment or in the family.

To offer assistance, to become aware of abuses at an early stage, to recognize the signals and to act or, even better, to prevent them, even in the first years of life of the Children, should be the goal! And on the other hand to offer help when the worst has become reality.

With her picture book "What's the matter, Joschi Bear?", Brigitte Endres, author and educator, wants to show even toddlers, together with Parents or educators, gently introduce the very emotional topic. Their goal is to empower children. Because they can only defend themselves if they recognize abuse or an attempt to abuse them in the first place.

Illustrator Anna Karina Birkenstock has rendered the story in a way that is appropriate for children, but also multi-layered. She has succeeded in conveying the mood of the story through her well-considered and sensitive color design, far beyond the text. Every child can sense how Joschi and his friend are feeling right now.
