BFB safety tips to kick off the barbecue season

With the rising temperatures, the barbecue season also begins. Since improper use of the barbecue leads to fires every year, the Fire Prevention Advisory Board (BFB) is once again drawing attention to the dangers.

Most barbecue accidents are caused by negligent behavior. Even simple measures bring more safety. The BFB recommends to check the gas grill before putting it into operation and not to neglect the maintenance during the summer months. With charcoal barbecues, the dangers lie, among other things, in the lighting of the barbecue food and in the disposal of the ashes. With the following BFB tips, many accidents can be avoided when grilling.

General precautions when grilling:

  • Place the grill on a stable surface outdoors.
  • Place combustible materials at least 1 meter away from the grill.
  • Keep an eye on children and animals near the fire.
  • Have a watering can with water, a fire blanket or a fire extinguisher ready.

Safety instructions for the gas grill:

  • At the beginning of the season and regularly thereafter, check whether the gas lines are tight. Lubricate the lines with soapy water. Any bubbles indicate leaks. Replace brittle and leaking lines with new ones immediately.
  • Regularly clean the grill to avoid grease fires.
  • Strictly prohibit smoking near the grill.
  • Always store gas cylinders outdoors and never in the basement.

Charcoal grill safety instructions

  • Use lighting cubes, fuel paste or a lighting chimney as a lighting aid - never use liquid fire accelerants such as methylated spirits or gasoline.
  • Burn only untreated, natural and dry wood.
  • Allow ash to anneal for at least 48 hours and water well before disposing.
