The BFB draws attention to fire hazards in kitchens
On the one hand, kitchens contain many electrical appliances, and on the other, they are used at high temperatures. Distraction and improper use of appliances are responsible for many kitchen fires in Switzerland. With the newly launched campaign, the BFB Fire Prevention Advice Center shows how kitchen fires can be easily prevented.
In Switzerland, around a quarter of fires are caused by electrical appliances and installations. The majority of these fires are not caused by technical defects in the appliances, but by the
This is due to carelessness and misconduct on the part of users. Every year, over 1000 fires occur throughout Switzerland due to the improper use of electrical appliances. They cause damage to buildings amounting to CHF 15.8 million per year.
Avoid distractions at the stove
Many of these fires originate in the kitchen. Due to the high temperatures, the stove is particularly dangerous. It should therefore never be left unattended while cooking. To avoid accidents caused by distraction, it is important to switch off the stove completely when interrupted and remove the pans from the hot hobs. This is particularly important when cooking with hot fat or oil, as this can cause a dangerous fat fire. The hob must also not be used as a work surface. Hot hobs can quickly set fire to objects such as cookbooks, paper bags or cloth towels.
Check electrical devices
Many kitchen fires are also caused by technical appliance faults. The BFB recommends regularly checking kitchen appliances for signs of wear and tear and broken cables. Defective or very old appliances should be replaced or checked by a specialist. Kettles, coffee machines, toasters, microwaves etc. should not be left unattended. After use, these appliances must be completely disconnected from the power supply.
