Every year, improper use of the barbecue leads to fires. For this reason, the Fire Prevention Advice Center (BFB) draws attention to the associated risks at the start of the barbecue season. The BFB emphasizes how important it is to check gas barbecues thoroughly before using them for the first time. Defective or brittle hoses must be replaced immediately. With charcoal barbecues, the burn-out time of the ash is often greatly underestimated and the ash is disposed of too early.

The following simple measures can prevent fires and accidents when barbecuing:

General precautions when barbecuing

  • Place the barbecue outdoors on a stable surface.
  • Place flammable materials at least one meter away from the grill.
  • Always keep an eye on children and animals in the vicinity of the barbecue.
  • Have a watering can with water, a fire blanket or a fire extinguisher ready.

Safety instructions for gas barbecues

  • Check gas pipes for leaks at the start of the season and regularly thereafter. Rub pipes with soapy water - bubbles indicate leaks. Replace brittle and leaking pipes immediately.
  • Clean the grill regularly to prevent grease fires.
  • Always store gas cylinders outdoors and never in the basement.
  • Strictly prohibit smoking in the vicinity of the barbecue.

Safety instructions for charcoal barbecues

  • Use firelighter cubes, fuel paste or firelighters. Never use liquid fire accelerants such as methylated spirits or gasoline.
  • Burn only untreated, natural and dry wood.
  • Allow ash to burn out for at least 48 hours. Water well before disposal.
