Mobile transformers against failure safety

Siemens is increasing its investment in research and development by around €300 million to around €4.8 billion in the current fiscal year 2016, according to the company. A large part of the additional funds will be invested in the growth markets of automation, digitization and electrification.

As the most important and innovative component, mobile transformers, so-called "Mobile Resiliency Transformers", were developed to increase the reliability of power grids, as Siemens informs us. These are not just ordinary replacement transformers. Mobile transformers enable operators to react more quickly and restore network operation faster than would be possible with a standard transformer. The mobile transformers combine three characteristics that are of the utmost importance in an emergency scenario:

  • Mobility: With their compact and lightweight design, the transformers can be transported to any location within a short time.
  • Quick installation: In order to restore normal operations within one day of the transformers arriving on site, mobile transformers are equipped with silicone-shielded pluggable bushings and pluggable cable connectors.
  • Versatility: Mobile transformers cover - depending on the operator's network - different rated outputs. For the operator, this means that he no longer has to invest in replacement equipment for each individual site and keep this equipment on hand.

Higher fire and explosion safety

According to Siemens, mobile transformers can be equipped with additional functionalities just like regular power transformers. As an example, the company cites the environmentally friendly insulating filling with Ester for higher fire and explosion safety.
