Fake policemen on the phone

The cantonal police St.Gallen warns against fake police officers. These fraudsters try to obtain large amounts of cash by giving false information. In the canton of St.Gallen, a 79-year-old woman was defrauded of a large sum of money last week.

A few days ago, a 79-year-old woman in the canton of St.Gallen was called by fake policemen. The unknown persons spoke in High German and pretended to be police officers, as the Kapo St. Gallen informed. In the course of the conversation, the pensioner was told that criminals were targeting her assets and that the money in her bank accounts and her valuables were no longer safe. She was told to withdraw the money and hand it over to the "police" for temporary, safe storage.

A short time later, according to police, the 79-year-old was handed over her valuables and the amount of money she had withdrawn.

Advice from the Kapo

The mentioned method does not correspond in any way to the approach of the police and other institutions. For this reason, the Kapo St.Gallen warns and advises the following:

  • Be skeptical of people speaking High German who pretend to be police officers.
  • Report suspicious persons to the cantonal police.
  • Do not provide any information about your personal financial circumstances.
  • Never hand over cash or valuables to unknown persons.

Report to your local police if you have already been a victim of fraud.
