The stocks of iodine tablets are renewed
After ten years, the iodine tablets that would have to be taken as a precaution in the event of a serious accident in a nuclear power plant (NPP) must be replaced. At its meeting, the Federal Council therefore instructed the Federal Department of Defense Civil Protection and Sport to replace the supplies within a radius of more than 50 kilometers of a NPP.
Iodine tablets for people outside the 50-kilometer radius are stored in central warehouses in the cantons. In the event of an accident in a Nuclear power plant they would be distributed to the entire population within 12 hours. The iodine tablets have been stored since 2010, their shelf life is ten years, and therefore they must be replaced by the army pharmacy in 2020. Within the radius of 50 kilometers around NPP, iodine tablets were distributed to the entire population. They can be used until 2024.
The cost of disposing of the old iodine tablets and replacing them with new ones is expected to amount to 4.8 million Swiss francs. They are to be shared between the federal government and the operators of the nuclear power plants.
