IP migration: New option for emergency telephony

As is well known, Swisscom is converting conventional fixed-network telephony to the Internet Protocol. From the beginning of 2018, the first four regions will be completely switched to IP. A solution exists for analog emergency call devices.

Swisscom began converting to the Internet Protocol (IP) four years ago and has converted over 1.6 million customers to date, with up to 40,000 more being added each month, according to the company. Beat Döös, Swisscom Head of All-IP Transformation, is confident: "By the end of 2017, virtually all residential customers will be using IP-based products, and we will inform every affected customer in good time. For business customers, we recommend completing the changeover this year." (Editor's note: For further information on the IP switchover, see also "Guide to Migration to All IP", published by the Swiss. Association of Telecommunications).

Complete IP switchover takes place region by region

Swisscom is already converting isolated areas to IP. From the beginning of 2018, the complete conversion of customer connections to IP will gradually begin in larger regions of Switzerland, as the company writes. This will allow the dismantling of the old network infrastructure to begin after the successful migration. The start will be made in the four major regions:

  • Solothurn, Biel, Jura
  • Schaffhausen, Winterthur, Frauenfeld
  • Balsthal, Olten, areas in Aargau and Oberaargau
  • Greater area Rapperswil, Jona, Glarus

Other regions are the subject of current planning and will be informed in good time. Swisscom recommends that business customers switch to IP technology before the end of 2017: In this way, resources from partner companies or providers of special applications (elevator telephones, alarm systems, etc.) would be more readily available.

New option for emergency telephony

From June, "Swisscom Line basic" and the "failover" option will provide dual protection in the event of a power or network failure: a battery will ensure that the router for the fixed-network connection also functions in the event of a power failure. The failover via mobile communications ensures that calls are diverted to the mobile network in the event of a fixed-network failure. This means that contact can be made even in an emergency. This solution was developed primarily for analog emergency telephony. Customers can easily continue to operate their analog emergency call devices on IP, the provider emphasizes.
