The volume of transmitted data in mobile networks is constantly increasing. The reasons are increasing mobile Internet use, attractive offers for data subscriptions, and the growing number of smartphones, tablets, and other Internet-connected devices and objects (Internet of Things). These are reasons why the transmission capacity of mobile networks must be increased. Moreover, with 5G, the next, more powerful mobile communications generation is already about to be introduced. Suitable frequencies were identified at the ITU World Radiocommunication Conference in November 2015 and will soon be available, according to the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM).

Bakom is therefore conducting a consultation on the allocation and use of the new mobile radio frequencies on behalf of the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom). The frequencies in question are the 700 MHz, 1,400 MHz and 3,400 to 3,800 MHz bands, which are expected to be available for use from 2019. The consultation is the first step in the preparatory work for the allocation of the new mobile radio frequencies.

The consultation - which will run from May 31 to July 31, 2017 - will seek the opinions of interested parties on the award of the new frequencies - in particular mobile network providers, system manufacturers, associations and cantonal conferences. The opinions will be incorporated into the preparation of the invitation to tender, according to the statement.
