Tips for better WLAN
Many people are dissatisfied with their wifi reception. With a few simple tricks, the situation can often be improved significantly.
Whether at home in the garden or on a commercial site: Reichelt Electronics provides five tips for strong and secure wifi:
Tip 1: Eliminate disruptive factors
Normal wifi routers transmit about 100 meters at home. However, this is only the case if the reception area is not obstructed. Any object in the way weakens the signal. Make sure that the WLAN router has a "clear view". A lot can be solved by changing the position: For example, if you want to have wifi outdoors, position the router at the corresponding window.
Tip 2: Repeater helps
For really good wifi in large areas, it is recommended to install a repeater. This repeats the signal and turns a weak signal into a strong one. Repeaters are quick to activate, even for technology novices: You connect the device to the mains, whereupon it then receives the existing wifi signal and then amplifies it. The best wireless channel is usually selected via an auto-channel search.
Tip 3: Secure wifi
Repeaters usually take over the installed security settings of the wifi router. Take the opportunity for a security check! Who knows your wifi password? Have you perhaps given someone the login data? He could now - thanks to the repeater - suddenly be within the now enlarged reception range again and thus become an uninvited second user of your wlan.
Tip 4: Strong in any weather
If you need stable wifi outdoors, you should install a special outdoor access point. With its weatherproof housing, it works even in extreme weather conditions from minus 30 to plus 70 degrees.
Tip 5: Mesh WiFi for big demands
Whether in the office or in a large house: routers and conventional repeaters often reach their limits. For full signal strength and a reliably fast network throughout the building, wifi routers with mesh networks are the latest trend. These special routers build up an area-wide network in combination with several devices. End devices such as tablets, cell phones and the like in wifi mode are always connected to exactly the network node that offers the strongest signal.
Attention wifi hotspots
And because it's the vacation season, here's another tip from G Data about wifi hotspots: More and more hotels and cafés are offering free wifi. This may be practical, but it is also risky. Using such a network, criminals can easily read e-mails or spy out important data such as credit card information or passwords. That's why it's important not to use Wifi for banking transactions or online shopping.
