What do you need to consider?

From December 1, 2017, the new vignette will be available at the usual points of sale. It has the basic color "orange metallic". The year on the adhesive side is blue, that on the front white. The vignette continues to cost 40 francs and can be obtained as usual at service stations and garages, at post office counters and at road traffic offices and customs offices.

Expired vignettes must be removed from the windshield to avoid possible obstructions to visibility. In order for the 2018 vignette to be valid, it must be affixed to the vehicle in its original state and without the use of other materials in the prescribed location, according to the Federal Customs Administration: on the inside of the windshield at the edge for passenger cars; on an easily accessible and non-replaceable part for trailers and motorcycles. The vignette is valid only for the vehicle to which it is affixed. Any removal and reattachment to the same or another vehicle is prohibited, the customs administration stressed in its media release.

Reuse is penalized

It is not forbidden to sell surplus, unused vignettes in the classifieds market or via an Internet platform. However, already used and thus cancelled or prepared vignettes are often offered. Anyone who uses such a vignette is liable to prosecution (Article 245 of the Criminal Code); he can be sanctioned with a prison sentence of up to three years. Since the freeway vignette is an official sign, under current law the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland is responsible for punishing corresponding offenses. However, this will change as of January 1, 2018: The cantonal prosecution authorities and no longer the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland will be responsible for this, writes the federal government.
