Beware of scam

For several weeks, people have been receiving telephone calls from alleged police officers. The public prosecutor's office of the Canton of Basel City has therefore already warned against this procedure several times.

And this is how the perpetrators proceed, according to the public prosecutor's office of the Canton of Basel City: A man and a woman, respectively, who speak well-groomed High German, establish a connection with the potential victims via a fake telephone number. An official number appears on the telephone display, for example that of a police station. The scammers then tell the victim that the assets deposited in banks are no longer safe and that he or she should withdraw the money and take it home. Police officers will then come to your home and take custody of the cash, jewelry and other valuables and deposit them safely.

Recommendations of the prosecutor's office

  • Be suspicious of unknown callers
  • Do not give any information about your financial situation or about existing money, jewelry and valuables.
  • Do not give any information about their age, marital status, profession, etc. and other roommates
  • Do not comply with the request to withdraw money
  • Do not hand over money to unknown persons or deposit money for the attention of third parties.
  • Do not allow strangers to enter your home
  • Do not disclose credit card numbers, pin code, passwords and bank card numbers
  • Inform the police immediately via the emergency number 117

Any injured parties are asked to report to the nearest police station, as the Basel Landschaft public prosecutor's office concludes.
