Tightening to be socially cushioned

The Swiss Federation of Trade Unions welcomes some tightening measures by the federal government. However, in the opinion of the union, more protection concepts should be enforced, especially in retirement and nursing homes.

The Swiss Federation of Trade Unions welcomes some of the measures taken by the Federal Council yesterday, in particular the additional protection of jobs at risk, for example with the general right to home office. Nevertheless, the SGB finds it "difficult to understand" why the Federal Council did not take the opportunity to enact stricter regulations for nursing and retirement homes.

Demand for more protective measures in nursing homes

The fact that employees who were infected with Covid-19 or had to go into quarantine were partially called back to work is also a thorn in the side of the union: This is "unacceptable" and endangers life and limb, it says from Bern. The opportunity could have been taken to adopt tightening measures in this area as well.

If the SGB has its way, protection concepts should be implemented more consistently and staff should be adequately compensated until those affected have been vaccinated. In addition, the situation in the nursing sector would worsen anyway due to the lack of personnel. Therefore, improvements in working conditions such as wages and training should also be considered.

Overall, the relaxation of the hardship provisions that has now been decided is welcomed, it continues. How quickly these can be implemented, however, will depend on the speed of the cantons. It has also become even more difficult for the unemployed to find a job again, as there is a threat of more people being fired. In a press release, the SGB therefore calls for an urgent extension of the daily allowances and the number of daily allowances.
