Side effects of Covid-19 vaccinations
Swissmedic, in collaboration with pharmaceutical centers, evaluated 597 adverse drug event reports from Covid 19 vaccinations through March 8.
As of March 8, 2021, Swissmedic has evaluated 597 reports of suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) from Covid-19 vaccines in Switzerland in collaboration with the regional pharmacovigilance centers. 343 reports relate to Pfizer/Biontech and 251 to Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine, according to the Swissmedic statement.
Majority of reports were not serious
About two-thirds of the reports concerned women, and in a smaller proportion of cases (less than one-third) men were affected. The larger proportion of reports were not severe. The most frequently reported reactions in cases were fever, shortness of breath, infection with SARS-nCoV-2, vomiting, hypersensitivity, and anaphylactic reactions, headache or migraine, and herpes zoster reactivation (10), according to Swissmedic.
In 21 of the serious cases, the individuals, most of whom were older than 85 and suffered from pre-existing conditions, died. These cases were analyzed particularly carefully, according to Swissmedic. However, there was no evidence that vaccination was the cause of the deaths, it said. Drug authorities in other countries, as well as the WHO, would come to similar conclusions when evaluating deaths temporally related to Covid-19 vaccines.
