Video security: Practical guide revised
A lot has changed in video security in recent years: In addition to technical aspects, new legal issues have also arisen - for example, with regard to the DSGVO. The BHE has therefore revised its practical guide to video security.
Video security systems not only help to solve criminal offenses or to enforce civil law claims or labor law measures: They also contribute - when used correctly - to the prevention or early interruption of crimes or other undesirable acts.
The prerequisite for the cameras to have the desired effect is, in particular, that the planning of the video security system is tailored to the intended use. There are many factors to consider - from the choice of video technology to the interaction with other security components, such as external security service providers. To enable planners, installers and users to make the most accurate decisions possible, the BHE Bundesverband Sicherheitstechnik (Federal Association for Security Technology) has reissued its 200-page video security practical guide.
Requirements for the new data protection
In the comprehensively revised and expanded edition for 2019/2020, almost all important details are listed that are significant for an efficient video security system, but also for legally compliant operation. The guidebook is therefore devoted not only to the latest technological developments in video security, but also to the general conditions under which images can be recorded and evaluated. The chapter on the legal aspects of video security has been completely revised and adapted to current case law. The requirements of the new data protection law under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the new Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG) have been taken into account in detail.
Cyber Security Chapter
The topic of data security also includes securing cameras and recorded images against access by cyber criminals. There have been a few examples of this in the recent past, such as the activities of the Russian hacker group "Carbanak," which captured nearly $1 billion from banks, in part by compromising surveillance cameras. As a complex IT system or even just a co-user of network technologies, video security solutions are inevitably at risk from current and future attack variants.
A new addition to the Video Practice Guide is a separate chapter on the subject of cyber security, which shows solution variants for different areas of application. Also presented in detail and in a separate chapter are sensible concepts for remote video surveillance and, in particular, the requirements for connection to an external control center. An important supplement to reading the guide is the video security system planning tool newly designed by the BHE. (BHE safety technology)
