Security industry DE: Sales could exceed 9 billion euros

The private security industry in Germany was able to increase its sales in the 1st half of 2019 compared to the previous year. The personal security services sector in particular is experiencing an upswing.

Compared to the previous year, sales in the private security industry rose by 4.4 percent in the first six months. This is shown by the Short-term statistics of the Federal Statistical Office for the service sector. "If this trend continues, sales will reach the €9 billion mark for the first time in 2019. This means that in just one decade, the turnover of our industry has more than doubled," says Harald Olschok, Chief Executive Officer of the German Security Industry Association (BDSW). The industry is benefiting from the growing need for protection on the part of the economy, the state and society. The main growth drivers are the protection of events, retail trade and public transport, as well as the wide range of security tasks at airports. There alone, he said, more than 25,000 private security personnel are working, with the trend continuing to rise. "The increasing propensity for violence in society is also leading to more and more job centers, hospitals and public buildings being protected privately," Olschok said.

Economy increasingly relies on personal provision

"The increasingly important and necessary self-protection of the economy and state institutions favor our industry. The decline in crime in the police crime statistics proclaimed by politicians is not least related to the fact that business and the state are hiring more and more private security services," says Olschok.

Technical systems are spreading ever faster

The revenue increases are distributed within economic class 80, which includes security companies, detective agencies, and security services with surveillance and alarm systems. According to the BDSW, the increases in the technical area have been significantly lower compared to personnel services, but are also rising steadily. "Security technology is becoming more powerful and also less expensive. As a result, these systems are spreading faster and faster. Integrated security solutions are becoming increasingly important for the service sector," says Olschok. The association includes many companies that offer such services.

According to the BDSW, the number of employees in Germany has risen by 1.7 percent over the course of the year, bringing the total to just under 270,000. The difference between revenue and employee growth, Olschok concludes, shows that security companies have obviously succeeded in implementing the rate increases agreed with their customers in 2018.
