Five myths and facts about sun protection
The skin must always be well protected from strong sunlight. A little sun cream is often not enough for this.
Already since the beginning of April, UV radiation is again so strong that sun protection becomes necessary. This is especially true for people who work outdoors. This is pointed out by the Employer's Liability Insurance Association for Energy "Textile Electrical Media Products" (BG ETEM) point out. In its magazine "Profi", the organization lists five widespread misconceptions related to sun protection.
Misconception No. 1 - tan protects the skin
Pre-tanned skin is less likely to get sunburned, but it still suffers from the rays. This is shown, for example, by premature aging of the skin, such as wrinkles and spots.
Misconception No. 2 - Our body needs the sun
Yes, but in masses. UV radiation is problematic for the genetic material of our skin cells. If the cells no longer succeed in repairing UV damage themselves, they can cause skin cancer.
Misconception No. 3 - Clothing protects us from the sun
Only to a limited extent. Normal clothing also lets UV rays through. Dark long-sleeved shirts or special UV clothing are best.
Misconception No. 4 - If you apply sunscreen frequently, you can stay in the sun longer
Sunscreen prolongs the skin's own protection. In other words, the time until sunburn occurs. Reapplying sunscreen does not extend the time. However, it is important to maintain the protection, e.g. after contact with water.
Misconception #5 - You don't get sunburn in the shade
Unfortunately, this is not true. Clouds, sunshades or trees filter only a part of the harmful UV rays.
