As of Monday, the borders to all Schengen states are open again

From June 15, 2020, the time has come: the current entry restrictions against all Schengen states will be lifted. This means that border controls at Switzerland's borders with these states will also be abolished. Full free movement of persons with all EU/EFTA states and the United Kingdom will apply again.

With the deletion of the Schengen countries from the list of high-risk countries and regions, all restrictions on people entering Switzerland from the Schengen area will be completely removed. This includes the ban on importing goods for private use that were acquired as part of a trip that served exclusively for shopping tourism, according to the Federal Council's June 12, 2020, statement. Likewise, all closed border crossings would be reopened. As before, the Federal Customs Administration (FCA) would carry out risk-based checks to prevent smuggling and cross-border crime.

Full free movement of persons with EU/EFTA states and UK

Full free movement of persons with all EU/EFTA states and the United Kingdom (UK) will apply again from June 15. With the exception of Bulgaria, Ireland, Croatia, Romania and Cyprus, all EU states are also part of the Schengen area. The UK, for which the free movement agreement is still applicable until December 31, 2020, is also not part of the Schengen area. For the time being, these six states would remain on the risk list after June 15, which means that entry into Switzerland for third-country nationals from these states would continue to be possible only to a limited extent. On the other hand, persons entitled to free movement and thus also citizens of these six states, their family members regardless of their nationality, as well as third-country nationals who are posted for a maximum of 90 days a year by a company based in these states, will be able to enter Switzerland again from June 15, according to the Federal Council's wording.

In the meantime, numerous Schengen states have also announced the opening of their borders on June 15, 2020.

Relaxations vis-à-vis third countries in a next step

The Federal Council will decide on easing entry restrictions against third countries at a later date and in coordination with the Schengen states, it said.
