It's that time again. The end of the summer vacation heralds the start of school for children. All the more reason for drivers to be particularly attentive to children. The Automobile Club of Switzerland (ACS) recommends that drivers observe a few basic rules of conduct in the interests of road safety and prevention.

In Switzerland, there are around 2000 road traffic accidents involving children under the age of 16 every year. According to the BF, the most common causes of accidents involving children under 14 are a lack of attention, easy distraction and a lack of concentration. Young children are not fully aware of dangers until they are eight to ten years old. First-graders are particularly at risk, as their first day at school after kindergarten usually involves getting used to a new route to school. In order to minimize the risks, the full attention of drivers in particular is required.

Tips and rules of conduct for motorists

The ACS calls on motorists to take the following tips and rules of conduct to heart:

- Pay particular attention near schools and at school bus and public transport stops.
- Reduce your speed if you see children at the side of the road. Be ready to brake.
- Stop completely before a pedestrian crossing. Children learn that they should not enter the road until the wheels of a vehicle have come to a complete stop.
- Do not give children hand signals, as this could prompt them to run across the road without paying attention to other dangers.
- You should also be careful with children on bicycles. Keep a sufficient distance to the side and be prepared for incorrect behavior.
- Always set a good example, especially when you are out and about on foot. Because children imitate your behavior.

Since it was founded over 100 years ago, the ACS has been committed to road safety and traffic education. With the campaign "The White Raven of the ACS" It is actively and sustainably committed to improving road safety for young and old alike. The ACS White Raven was created as a symbol for accident prevention in road traffic. For almost 60 years, it has stood for the traffic instruction of children and the road safety of all other road users
