Army exercises emergency at Leibstadt nuclear power plant
On Monday, April 11, emergency forces of the Swiss Confederation and the Leibstadt nuclear power plant trained in the air transport of emergency materials. This involved flight movements with Superpuma helicopters of the Swiss Air Force throughout the day.
On Monday, several missions of Swiss Air Force Superpumas took place between Reitnau and the Leibstadt nuclear power plant. This was an emergency exercise. According to the Federal Office for Civil Protection (Babs), the emergency forces of the federal government and the nuclear power plant trained the emergency transport of various loads such as pumps, emergency power generators, fuel and other material. The emergency response material is usually stored jointly by the nuclear power operators in Reitnau AG and regularly transported by truck and helicopter to the various Swiss nuclear power plants as part of these exercises.
Yesterday, trucks and an army Superpuma helicopter transported various loads to the Leibstadt nuclear power plant. These were distributed to prepared locations on the plant site for exercise purposes. Similar exercises had already been carried out in previous years at various nuclear power plants in Switzerland. After the reactor accident in Fukushima, the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI decreed that every operator of a Swiss nuclear power plant had to set up an external storage facility for emergency materials.
