FOPH: New head of the accident and health insurance division
Thomas Christen will head the Health and Accident Insurance Directorate at the Federal Office of Public Health from March 2017. As Vice Director, he will also sit on the Executive Board.
The Federal Office of Public Health has appointed Thomas Christen as Vice Director and new Head of the Health and Accident Insurance Directorate as of March 2017. He succeeds Oliver Peters, who left the FOPH at the end of November 2016 to take up a new position at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV).
Thomas Christen has been a personal assistant to Federal Councilor Alain Berset since 2012. In the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA), he has been involved in particular in health policy dossiers in recent years and has a close knowledge of the Swiss healthcare system, the functioning of the federal administration and the legislative processes at national level. Before joining the FDHA, Thomas Christen headed the secretariat of the Swiss Social Democratic Party, among others.
The 41-year-old from eastern Switzerland studied law at the University of St. Gallen and lives in Bern with his partner and two sons.
