Basel police rely on electric vehicles

The Basel-Stadt cantonal police recently unveiled its new alarm ambulance: a Tesla X 100D. The first Basel Alarmpikett went into service over 70 years ago.

It has to be ready for action around the clock: the alarm picket (AP) vehicle of the Basel-Stadt cantonal police. The AP has always depended on robust, spacious and powerful vehicles. This is because they are exposed to a high load and have to cover between 100 and 200 kilometers per day, mainly in urban traffic.

The alarm picket is the first response element, as the technical jargon goes, during interventions. When the first alarm team of the Kapo Basel-City entered service in November 1946, it rushed to missions in a Plymouth De Luxe 4 Door Touring Sedan. With their latest AP vehicle, the Basler are in line with the trend - they are relying on a Stromer.

A Tesla X 100D with 525 hp

In spring 2019, the first AP electric bolides of the Kapo Basel-Stadt will be seen on the streets. The key figures of the new Tesla X 100D police vehicle are as follows:

  • Electric drive with 386 kW or 525 hp
  • large storage space and high payload for the three-person AP team, its equipment and a possible detainer
  • Charging cycle: approx. 85 km more range per hour of charging

Overall, Basel 2019 plans to purchase additional Tesla as AP vehicles in the third quarter of 2019.

Procurement strategy for vehicles

All vehicle procurements are evaluated according to Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), according to the media information. Operating costs and resale value are always taken into account. According to the information, the optimal replacement time for a vehicle is calculated taking into account the initial costs for commissioning and the increasing repair and maintenance costs with increasing operating time.  (rs)
