Good lighting makes work easier. That's why every workplace needs adequate lighting. More light makes production on fast-cycling machines safer, for example, while traffic routes in a building can manage with far less. DIN EN 12464-1 specifies these and other requirements for workplace lighting "Lighting of workplaces - Part 1: Indoor workplaces". It was published in November 2021 and is one of the most widely used standards in Europe.

Among other things, it specifies the necessary minimum values for brightness and color rendering for different activities - from the automotive workshop to sales areas and office workplaces. The industry initiative licht.de, in collaboration with the German Society for Lighting Technology and Lighting Design (LiTG), has published a guide that provides additional information on how architects and lighting designers can practically apply the standard when planning lighting for workplaces.

Helpful tips in the new licht.forum 60 brochure

The specialist publication licht.forum 60 "Guideline DIN EN 12464-1:2021-11 Lighting of indoor workplaces" gives tips on how to read the standard and the associated tables. The use of context modifiers is also explained: these are steps for increasing the maintenance value of illuminance, which are always applied if there are certain reasons. One such reason is, for example, that older employees need more light to carry out their tasks.

One chapter is dedicated to the important topic of glare. It explains how direct glare is assessed according to the UGR method and answers frequently asked questions from the field. The comic "How planner Pit does it" loosens up the specialist publication and describes the lighting design process by way of example. Additional information on the visual and non-visual effects of light rounds off the new guide.

It also provides a compact overview of what has changed in DIN EN 12464-1. A table in the appendix of the guide clearly summarizes all the adjusted values with regard to illuminance. A further table shows new applications. Deviations between the standard and the Technical Rules for Workplaces ASR A3.4 are the subject of a separate article.
