In the cold months, fireplaces and stoves create a cozy atmosphere. However, an open fire also harbors a number of dangers.

Many fires are caused by incorrect operation of the fireplace or stove. In its latest campaign, the BFB fire prevention advice center shows how such fires can be easily prevented.

Stoves and fireplaces that have not been in use for a long time should be checked and cleaned by a chimney sweep before they are used for the first time. Chimneys that are used irregularly can be blocked by bird or wasp nests, leaves or dirt. Parts of the system may also be damaged. A prior inspection by the chimney sweep is therefore essential.

Stoves are often bought from specialist dealers and installed by the customers themselves. In doing so, they often forget which legal regulations must be complied with. Only a specialist can ensure that there is no risk of fire for residents during subsequent operation. The installation of a new stove must therefore be carried out by a specialist.

It's that easy to prevent fires:

  • Fireplaces and stoves must be used in accordance with their intended purpose. They are not a heating system for the whole house.
  • Never add too much fuel at once and do not operate the stove continuously. Both can lead to overheating.
  • Only burn untreated, well-dried wood.
  • Keep the safety doors or metal curtains of the stove or fireplace closed. These reduce the risk of sparks.
  • Observe safety distances in accordance with the operating instructions. Do not place any flammable objects in the hazardous area.
  • Do not use liquid fire accelerants such as petrol, methylated spirits or bioethanol.
  • Never leave children unattended in a room with a burning fireplace or wood-burning stove.
  • Leave the ashes to cool for at least 48 hours in a non-combustible container with a lid.
  • Keep fire extinguishers to hand.
  • Observe the manufacturer's operating instructions
