Fire protection: Pipeline system guideline commented
Practice has shown that not all market participants are able to cope with the Model Piping Systems Directive. This is particularly true with regard to the legal and electrotechnical aspects. The German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association and VdS Schadenverhütung therefore provide explanations.
Burning wiring systems can act like fuses when they penetrate walls. But penetration is necessary, among other things, to ensure the functions of systems in the event of fire, emphasize the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI) and VdS Schadenverhütung. The building code requirements for this can be found in the Model Line Installation Guideline (MLAR).
Explanations and practical hints
However, numerous practical experiences show that the contents and effects of the MLAR are not immediately clear to all responsible persons - especially with regard to legal and electrotechnical aspects. To support installers, manufacturers, authorities and insurers, the ZVEI and the VdS have therefore drawn up corresponding explanations and practical instructions for implementation. These are available free of charge as VdS 3536 and as a ZVEI leaflet.
Torsten Pfeiffer, product group manager for fire detection and alarm systems and VdS project manager for the new publication, explains: "On 28 compact pages, we offer supplementary assistance, among other things, for the protection target consideration of the line systems, for the treatment of the fire department periphery and for the function maintenance for extinguishing systems as well as alarm functions. In this way, we want to contribute not only to reliable safety, but also to making work easier for all those responsible for optimum fire protection."
Michael Brahm, Manager Safety & Security Technologies, from ZVEI, adds: "The joint commentary is now published in its 2nd edition and offers the entire fire protection industry a compact aid for interpreting the MLAR. In practice, specific questions regularly arise about the implementation of the complex set of regulations. This is where we come in with our joint publication by providing a practical interpretation."
