Beznau nuclear power plant emergency protection under review
Under the direction of the Federal Office for Civil Protection, the 2019 overall emergency exercise will take place between November 13 and 15, 2019. Its purpose is to check the emergency protection of the Beznau nuclear power plant.
The Federal Office for Civil Protection (Babs) is required by the Emergency Preparedness Ordinance to conduct a general emergency exercise (GNU) every two years in consultation with the emergency preparedness partners. According to schedule, the GNU19 will take place this time with the Beznau nuclear power plant. The aim of the exercise is to test the measures planned to protect the population in the event of a severe incident. The focus is on dealing with the immediate, medium and long-term consequences of an accident at a nuclear power plant.
During the exercise, which seamlessly follows the Safety Network Exercise 2019 the emergency response partners are accompanied by teams of observers. Their task is to determine whether the goals set are being achieved, according to the Babs. A final report will then show which plans and processes have proven successful and where there is still potential for optimization.
Emergency response partners include the Nuclear Safety Inspectorate Ensi, the Federal Civil Protection Staff, the National Alarm Center, the Defense Group, Meteo-Switzerland and the cantonal command staffs.
