Significantly more mental health problems among young adults
According to the latest AXA study on mental health, over a quarter of the Swiss population struggles with mental health problems. The change in the 18 to 24 age group is particularly striking. Here, the number of people who say they suffer from mental health problems has risen from 30% to 38%.
Although Switzerland is still in a very good position compared to other countries in terms of psychic Health of their population, the figures from the latest AXA study are quite striking: although only slightly more than in the previous year, more than a quarter (27 %) of all people surveyed said that they were interested in psychicsuffer from mental health problems. Of the 27 percent of all respondents who describe themselves as mentally ill, around half say they suffer from depression. According to the study, depression is therefore still the most common psychic illness. However, the figures for both depression (from 15 to 13 %) and anxiety disorders (from 10 to 9 %) are declining. In particular, there has been a sharp increase (from 3 to 5 %) in psychic suffering due to drug and medication abuse. A similar picture can be seen in neighboring Germany and Belgium, while the figures for Europe as a whole remained constant.
Generation gap widens
There are also clear differences between the age groups. While psychic While the number of illnesses among people over 55 is declining (from 17 to 14 %), the study shows a significant increase among 18 to 24-year-olds (from 30 to 38 %). This age group in particular shows increasing trends in anxiety disorders, eating disorders and schizophrenia.
Women are more likely to seek professional help than men
Around half of mentally ill people in Switzerland seek professional help (52 %). In a country comparison, the rate in Germany is similarly high (53 %); only in Spain is the figure higher at 57%. The difference between the sexes in Switzerland is striking: For women, 58% of the population psychicn suffering receive professional support. In contrast, the figure for men is significantly lower at 46%. Around two thirds of all professionally supported people with psychicof the disease in Switzerland also receive drug support.
About the study
In collaboration with the Ipsos research institute, AXA surveyed 17,000 people between the ages of 18 and 75 from 16 countries last fall about their mental well-being using an online questionnaire - including 1,000 people in Switzerland.
