"After a slight decline in the previous year, sales rose to a total of 8.73 billion euros. This means that in just one decade, the turnover of our industry has more than doubled," says Harald Olschok from the German Security Industry Association (BDSW). According to the association, growth drivers were and are to be found in the following areas in particular: Protection of refugee accommodations, of events, in retail, in public transport and in the diverse security tasks at airports. "The increasing propensity to violence in society led to more and more job centers, hospitals and public buildings being protected privately," says Harald Olschok.

The increasingly important and necessary self-protection of the economy and state institutions would lead to further increases in turnover in the industry. This would relieve the police and reduce the number of officially registered crimes.

Big plus in safety technology

The sales increases are distributed within the economic class 80, which includes security companies, detective agencies as well as security services with monitoring and alarm systems. Particularly high increases were recorded in the technical sector (+7.5%), he said. "Security technology is becoming more and more powerful and also cheaper. As a result, these systems are spreading faster and faster. Integrated security solutions are becoming increasingly important for the service sector," Olschok further says.

In contrast to the revenue figures, the number of employees has stagnated at around 260,000, according to the BDSW, which says security companies have apparently succeeded in implementing the rate increases agreed with their customers in 2018.
