The BFB offers safety tips for safe barbecuing
On warm days, barbecuing is becoming more popular again in Switzerland. However, carelessness leads to numerous fires and injuries every year. The Fire Prevention Advisory Service (BFB) is therefore drawing attention to the most important safety measures and showing how risks associated with barbecuing can be easily avoided.

Many barbecue accidents are caused by negligent behavior or a lack of caution when handling fire and hot materials. Improper use or technical defects can quickly become dangerous, especially with gas and charcoal grills. That is why the BFB recommends regularly inspecting grills and consistently following basic safety rules.
For gas grills, the hoses and connections should be checked regularly. Leaky or brittle hoses must be replaced immediately. Charcoal grills must never be lit with liquid fire starters, as this can cause explosive jets of flame. Instead, only suitable fire starters should be used. Caution is also advised after grilling: The ashes can continue to smolder for a long time and cause fires. They must therefore be allowed to cool for at least 48 hours before being disposed of.
BFB Safety Tips for Gas Grills
- Check gas lines and connections regularly for leaks. Replace any defective or brittle hoses immediately.
- Always open the grill lid before lighting the fire.
- Clean the grill regularly to prevent grease fires.
- Always store gas cylinders outdoors and never in the basement.
BFB Safety Tips for Charcoal Grills
- Use firelighter cubes, fuel paste or firelighters. Never use liquid fire accelerants such as methylated spirits or gasoline.
- Place the grill on a stable, non-flammable surface.
- Burn only untreated, natural and dry wood.
- Let the ash burn out for at least 48 hours.
