The ten most expensive types of accidents
Not every type of accident costs the same: the more complex the injury, the higher the medical costs. Pension and daily allowance costs can also add up quickly.
Not every accident incurs the same costs. Medical costs vary depending on the type of injury, but daily allowances and pension benefits can be even more significant. While on average the costs per accident amount to 5100 francs, they can be much higher depending on the type of accident.
Not surprisingly, the most expensive accident category is an injury to the spinal cord. The medical costs here average 178,900 Swiss francs, plus daily allowances and pensions of 324,900 Swiss francs - for the first five years only, mind you. With this type of injury in particular, however, the pension costs often continue for decades, so that the costs can add up to several million francs for a single case.
Nerve injuries also entail high costs, ranging from just under 50,000 to over 100,000 Swiss francs in total over the first five years, depending on the location of the injury.
However, if you look at the total costs per accident type, the figures look somewhat different, as the frequency of an accident type also plays a role here. Here, fractures, knee injuries and muscle/tendon injuries are at the top of the list.
Suva is announcing these figures as part of a new campaign to raise awareness of the costs of accidents.
