Digital identity: Weko gives green light
Swiss Post and SBB are planning to offer a uniform digital identity in Switzerland via a joint venture from fall 2017. SBB's stake in the Swiss Post subsidiary SwissSign AG recently received the green light from the Competition Commission and the EU authority.
Today, anyone who wants to purchase products and services online registers on a provider's portal, enters their coordinates and selects a user name and password. Many users have to repeat this process for a large number of online services; in the process, they increasingly lose track of their data and sometimes expose themselves to unnecessary security risks, as the two companies emphasize in their joint media release. Swiss Post and SBB would therefore launch a standardized digital identity (Swiss E-ID) in the fall of 2017. With this, users will be able to access various online services via a single secure login. Authorities and companies would benefit from the qualitatively improved identity and could thus expand their online services more securely. The top priority is full compliance with the applicable data protection regulations.
Swiss Post and SBB each with 50% stake
The development and marketing of the unified digital identity will be handled by a joint venture - the SwissSign AG - in which Swiss Post and SBB will each hold 50 percent of the share capital. Both the Swiss Competition Commission (Weko) and the European competition authorities have approved the formation of the joint venture, it was announced today.
