Burglaries are on the increase in Switzerland: Simple protective measures work with predictable behavior patterns

In Switzerland, the number of burglaries is rising again and follows largely predictable patterns, particularly in connection with absences and everyday habits. In this context, prevention remains the most effective lever for risk reduction

The number of burglaries in Switzerland has risen significantly in recent years. According to the latest police crime statistics, over 46,000 cases were registered in 2025, which corresponds to around 128 burglaries per day. After a decline during the pandemic, the trend is rising again and confirms the return to a high level.

Beyond the numbers, burglaries follow relatively consistent patterns. Offenders mainly target temporarily unoccupied homes and act at easily identifiable times, particularly in the late afternoon or evening. Despite these findings, fewer than one in five cases are solved, which underlines the importance of preventive measures.

Recurring situations

Based on the observed assignments, certain situations occur particularly frequently. Longer absences, especially during vacations or at weekends, are a decisive factor. Similarly, apartments that are empty during the day due to professional absences are at increased risk. In addition, easily accessible properties, particularly those on the first floor or with poorly visible entrances, are targeted more frequently. These situations are not unusual, but are part of everyday life for many households.

Prevention as a key lever

Against this backdrop, prevention remains the most effective measure. Simple solutions can significantly reduce the risk, in particular by making homes less predictable or less accessible. Alarm systems have a recognized deterrent effect: in the vast majority of cases, their triggering leads to the immediate termination of the attempted break-in. TCS pursues this approach with solutions that are tailored to different needs - be it to permanently secure a home or only during absences.
