Electrical appliances are the main cause of fires

In Switzerland, most house and apartment fires start from an electrical appliance. If the devices are defective or not operated correctly, they can quickly become the cause of a fire. BFB shows how fires can be avoided.

Across Switzerland, around 10,000 fires occur every year. More than a quarter of these fires are caused by electricity. This corresponds to more than seven fires per day, according to the Fire Prevention Advisory Service (BFB) writes. On the one hand, technical defects in electrical installations and devices are responsible for this. On the other hand, the cause often lies in the carelessness and negligence of people.

Important points for fire prevention

Many of these fires can be avoided by correct behavior. The following points should therefore be observed for electrical equipment:

- Do not use the stand-by mode. Switch off devices completely.
- If possible, unplug the device when not in use.
- Prevent heat build-up by allowing sufficient air circulation to the units. Always keep ventilation grilles clear.
- When placing the equipment, ensure that the cables are not kinked, pinched or crushed. Immediately disconnect the device from the power supply if the line is damaged.
- Check devices and lines regularly for signs of wear and defects. Have defective or very old devices checked or replaced by a specialist.
- Only charge lithium-ion batteries with the original charger. Replace the batteries immediately if they are deformed, cracked or blown.
- Install smoke detectors to quickly detect fires.
- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
