The University of Applied Sciences Neuchâtel was affected by a cyber attack. First suspicions already occurred over the weekend, as the Haute Ecole Arc writes in a statement. However, it was not known at that time how serious the incident was. According to the director Brigitte Bachelard, intensive investigations were carried out. The first signs of a cyberattack were computer anomalies and problems with the VPN connection.
"Banal" ransom demand
It was not until late Monday afternoon that Haute Ecole received confirmation from the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) that it had been a targeted cyberattack. It was not clear at that time whether data had been stolen or what vulnerability the cybercriminals might have exploited. Nevertheless, there had been a ransom demand, which, according to the school, was "quite banal" and did not give the impression that it was a serious demand.
In view of a possible data theft, only e-mails may have been affected, the director is quoted as saying. Therefore, Haute Ecole decided to cut off access to all servers and emails to protect its infrastructure and data.
