Carnival time: Caution, fire hazard!

Costumes and decorations as a fire risk: At carnival events, even a cigarette spark can cause serious injuries and high property damage.

Carnival costumes and decorations usually use highly flammable materials.

Fires can quickly break out at carnival parades and parties. This often results in serious injuries and high property damage. In order to avoid fire damage during carnival, the Fire Prevention Advisory Board (BfB), easily combustible materials should be treated with fire retardants or not used at all.

Costumes and decorations are particularly vulnerable to fire in large gatherings of people. Even the sparks from a cigarette can start a fire. Therefore, caution is advised when handling smoking materials and open fires. Protect yourself and your surroundings by wearing costumes made of flame-retardant material.

When installing decorations in buildings, care must be taken to ensure that the signaling of escape routes remains visible at all times. According to Swiss fire safety regulations, decorations must not lead to an increase in danger. They must be installed in such a way that the safety of persons is not endangered. Flammable decorations are prohibited in escape and rescue routes.

Safety tips:
- Refrain from using tulle and nylon fabrics for carnival costumes. These fabrics melt when exposed to great heat and can
cause serious skin injuries.
- Keep escape routes such as stairways, corridors or exits clear.
- Emergency exit signs must always be visible and recognizable as such.
- Do not use open fire in lanterns or torches as decoration.
- Use decorations that are difficult to burn or treat the decoration material with fire retardant.
- Always have a bucket of water, fire blanket or fire extinguisher on hand for emergencies.

If an accident occurs despite all precautionary measures, cool burns immediately and for a longer period of time. In the event of a fire, the following applies: Alert - Rescue - Extinguish.
