Hands off alcohol on the slopes

Addiction Switzerland warns against alcohol consumption on the ski slopes: The risk of accidents increases under the influence of alcohol.

The white splendor in our mountains generates considerable sales for the leisure industry. In addition to the modern infrastructure, the offer also relies on the festive character of fun in the snow. And whoever says festive, all too often also means alcohol.

Skiing, a pleasure without risk?

In terms of speed, skiing is like participating in road traffic: turning down the slopes requires certain skills if you want to arrive safely. Although skiing has neither traffic rules nor a blood alcohol limit, it is still a risky activity, especially because of the high speeds.

The alcohol level and speed

Carving, telemark, snowboard, sled - whatever equipment you use to hit the slopes, the risk of accidents or falls depends on your concentration as well as your ability to judge your speed correctly and react to unexpected situations. Thus, alcohol plays the same role on the ski slopes as it does on the road; it reduces concentration and reaction time. It is therefore advisable to refrain from consuming alcohol during sports.

Alcohol on the slopes, a tricky marketing strategy

The offer of alcoholic beverages is omnipresent - during the day at the edge of the slopes to late at night in the ski resorts. The mixture of alcohol and music appeals especially to a young audience. The ski resorts convey an image of well-being and relaxation. However, this should not be associated with alcohol in order to avoid accidents that irretrievably spoil the fun of winter vacations.
