Carnival has its pitfalls: From the point of view of fire safety, costumes and decorations are particularly at risk in large gatherings of people. Even the sparks from a cigarette can start a fire. Therefore, caution is advised when handling smoking materials and open fires. The tip of the Fire Prevention Advisory Service (BfB) is therefore: Only wear costumes made of flame-retardant material.

Attention for escape and rescue routes

When decorating buildings, care must be taken to ensure that the signalization of escape routes remains visible at all times. According to fire safety regulations, decorations must not lead to an increase in danger. They must be installed in such a way that the safety of persons is not endangered. Flammable decorations are prohibited in escape and rescue routes.

Safety tips from the BfB

  • Refrain from using tulle and nylon fabrics for carnival costumes; these melt when exposed to high heat and can cause serious skin injuries.
  • Impregnate fabrics with fire retardant to make them safer.
  • Keep escape routes such as stairways, corridors or exits clear.
  • Emergency exit signs must always be visible and recognizable as such.
  • Do not use open fire in lanterns or torches as decoration.
  • Use decorations that are difficult to burn or treat the decoration material with fire retardant.
  • Always have a bucket of water, fire blanket or fire extinguisher on hand for emergencies.

If, despite all precautions, an accident occurs, the burn must be cooled immediately and for a prolonged period.

In the event of a fire, the following applies: Alert, rescue, extinguish!
