Airport ZH: Explosives random sampling

As of today, random checks with explosive trace detection devices are being carried out on passengers and hand luggage at Zurich Airport.

The new EU regulation applies from September 1, 2015, and Zurich Airport has adapted its security checks for passengers and hand baggage accordingly. The modified controls provide for increased random checks of hand luggage and now also passengers for traces of explosives. Samples will therefore be taken from passengers in an unpredictable manner, for example on their hands and waist area, and examined for explosives, as the press office of Zurich Airport writes.

The evaluation of the samples takes only a few seconds by means of chemical analysis and without the use of a radioactive source. The random checks with the explosive trace detection devices are absolutely harmless to passengers' health.

The regulation concerning prohibited items and liquids in hand baggage remains unchanged for passengers.
