Tips for more IT security
Working without the Internet is practically inconceivable. To ensure that e-mails, messengers and web applications really do make everyday life easier, a few basics such as virus protection and secure passwords are important.
"You don't have to be a security expert to be reasonably safe on the Net," says Oliver Dehning, head of Eco's Security Competence Group. The Eco Association of the Internet Industry gives five practical tips for more IT security in the office.
Basic tip 1: Keep software up to date
Many security gaps are closed by software updates. It is therefore important to keep the programs on workstations, mobile devices and servers up to date and to apply updates promptly. Ideally, you should use the automatic update functions. Do not ignore notices about updates and do not put them off for a long time.
Basic tip 2: Take protective measures
Security software such as anti-virus programs and firewalls are a must for all PCs, tablets and smartphones, as this is the only way to be armed against new threats. It is important that the software is always kept up to date. Warning messages should never be ignored; if in doubt, get to the bottom of the matter or consult an expert.
Basic tip 3: Secure handling of passwords
Direct access to the computer or application programs is a frequent gateway for attacks on office computers. Therefore, use different and strong passwordsr, especially on the Internet, and do not share them with third parties. To remember all passwords, it helps to have a password safe that can also be used across devices. Always lock the screen, even if you only leave your workplace for a short time.
Basic tip 4: Be careful with USB sticks
USB sticks are practical and facilitate data transport. Unfortunately, however, they can also transmit computer viruses if, for example, they were previously used on poorly secured devices. So, if possible, it is better not to use them or to check the USB stick used with the antivirus software. You should also be careful if you other USB devices such as e-cigarettes or toys to their PC for charging.
Basic tip 5: Use security scans
Files on the workstation should be scanned regularly with the installed antivirus software for infestation that has gone unnoticed so far. For the company website, there is a solution with SIWECOS (https://siwecos.de/) a free quick check and a detailed daily check for known security vulnerabilities.
