Fake emails in circulation
E-mails containing malware with fake senders from the city of Zurich are currently being sent in Switzerland. The malware wave known as "Retefe" has been running in Switzerland for some time and is known to the Federal Reporting and Analysis Centre for Information Assurance.
The e-mails are simplistic in design and usually contain spelling errors. In terms of content, they do not correspond to the activity of the respective institution. A link or an attachment with malware is embedded in the e-mail, which is installed on the computer by clicking on the attachment. The sender address, subject and content of the e-mails vary. The following fake City of Zurich sender addresses are known to date:
- info@zuerich.ch
- info@pkzh.ch
- info@wildnispark.ch
- info@ewz.ch
Behavioral tips for dealing with suspicious e-mails
Follow these rules of conduct in case you receive a suspicious email:
- Distrust e-mails that you receive unsolicited, whose sender address you do not know or whose content seems strange to you. E-mail addresses can be forged, which means that the e-mail does not always actually come from the displayed sender.
- Do not open links or attachments from suspicious emails.
- Be wary of emails that demand an action from you and threaten consequences such as loss of money, criminal charges, account or card suspension, missed opportunities or bad luck.
- If you are unsure whether it is a fake email, type parts of the email's text into Google. Often, fake emails have already appeared in a similar form elsewhere.
